The Black-tailed Godwit numbers are dropping gradually , but the flock over the weekend at times was in excess of 70. Dunlin, Greenshank and Redshank have all featured as well.
A female Merlin was also on the backroad at the weekend, another Marsh Harrier being sighted at Cotehill previous to that.
These have produced a network of pools in the fields around Collieston and Slains. High tide on the Ythan especially results in good numbers of visiting waders just now, with a selection of images below.
Top count that I've had in the patch area is of 48 Black-tailed Godwit in the last few days, the highest total I can recall for the Collieston environs.
The Ythan itself is pulling in impressive numbers of a range of species, though Lapwing and Dunlin seem particularly healthy.

When the sun comes out raptors have been busy chasing the waders, or being mobbed, with Peregrine, Merlin, Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Osprey and Marsh Harrier all being seen in a 24 hour period coming through the patch over the weekend.
But this incredibly cute individual turned up in the garden at Cotehill this morning. Hopefully it will stay for a while.
The estuary continues seeing record number of Black-tailed Godwits with 328 being a peak count so far. A first year Hobby was at Waulkmill last Sunday. This morning the southerly gale overnight did bring with it a few hundred Meadow Pipit into the Collieston area, with a Pied Flycatcher being along the back road. Otherwise the main arrivals were of a few Willow Warblers and Wheatear.
2 Humpback Whales now are continuing to show intermittently, including very well indeed off Collieston, with displays of breaching reported some days. Hackley Bay is another favoured spot as well as the Ythan mouth still.
Found yesterday (HAA) it was still present today.
Elsewhere there was a Red-backed Shrike on the Collieston backroad (Mains of Slains area), with 3 Pied Flycatchers and a Garden warbler. Good numbers of Willow Warblers also.
Garden warbler and Redstart at Kirkton, and a Pied Flycatcher at Kirkton yesterday.
NB Turns out that there were 2 Red-backed Shrike in the same area of Mains of Slains yesterday.
A Juv Little Stint added to the variety this evening at Inches Point alongside a single Ruff and around 30 Dunlin. The Golden Plover numbers are gradually building with a small flock of a few 10s favouring the Snub.
Meanwhile in Aberdeen , at Girdleness, a very confiding adult White-rumped Sandpiper is giving amazing views....hopefully a taste of more to come on the patch.
It is accompanied by a mass of seals, terns, Gannet and varied gull species. Up to 10 Arctic Skuas have been seen in the area. The White-winged Black Tern (2nd Summer bird) re-appeared, once more spotted by Cotehill's birder, on the 29th and 30th of July. It commuted between Cotehill and Meikle Lochs.

Very surprisingly a new bird, an adult, appeared in the morning on Meikle Loch on the 5th August. Pictures below of this individual.

A white-winged black tern briefly graced Cotehill Loch this morning. It's the first one for the Collision area but unfortunately didn't stay long and was last seen flying south at 10.40.
A tricky ID (from American Golden) this bird showed all the necessary features with: short primary projection (3 primaries only) beyond the long tertials, bold gold spangling in the upperparts, particularly long bill and legs, small slim bodied with relatively large head. White in flanks intermingled with black, and likewise in the undertail and vent. Heard also to call a number of occasions , giving a distinctive if rather muted "chu-it", reminiscent of a distant Spotted Redshank.

The weekend got off to a good start with yesterday a Glossy Ibis being also in the Slains Pools area for a few hours in the evening before there being an increased count of birds at Strathbeg later in the evening.

Otherwise the patch has had a little passerine movement over the last week with a male Red-backed shrike on the 15th, more or less in the village. A different bird to the one previously at the Forvie Centre. |This one showed more grey in the upper-parts.

A young, or perhaps female Marsh Harrier, is frequenting the patch area on and off over the last 6 days.
One of the finest spring birds you'll ever see. Exciting times on the patch!
There was a continuous, if low level, passage of Swallows coming through the area, along with small numbers of Wheatear along the roadsides.
A group of 7 Whimbrel went over Sandloch early afternoon.

The highlight was a summer plumaged Lesser Yellowlegs just off the patch area near Logie Buchan. On a small pool, by the track, it allowed close views.

Maybe more to report in next few days with SE winds predicted.
Early April saw a fine but frustratingly elusive Great Grey Shrike in the Little Collieston / North Forvie area, and another Black Redstart on the Reserve. Then in late April it was possible to see both King Eider and Avocet on the estuary on the same day!

Things then upped another gear, firstly with the big discovery (literally) of the Great White Egret on Cotehill Loch, which thankfully stuck around so Rosie and I could see it. It was still here yesterday (5th May) and has been seen on both Cotehill and Sand Lochs.

This was followed up on Tuesday by another stonking southern overshoot, this time a Hoopoe, which caused some language in the Reserve office as it flew past the window, grub in bill, Jackdaw in pursuit! It eventually lost its pursuer and flopped its way onto the Reserve, where it sadly went to ground and wasn't subsequently pinned down. Frustrating but exhilarating!

In other news, there has been a good passage of Whimbrel this week, including a flock of 30+ over Cotehill on Monday. They have been in evidence again this evening, with noisy small parties passing over the house.

Elsewhere, there has been a long-staying second-summer Mediterranean Gull at the Forvie ternery, where all the usual tern species are now back on territory. This Med Gull may be the same one sighted by Collieston Birder in the village back in January, but who knows? Anyway, it was joined today by a stunning full adult, though the two didn't seem to be interested in each other. Surely a future breeder in the Forvie gullery (where there are currently 1,921 pairs of Black-headed Gulls nesting).

Finally, there has been a small flurry of Lesser Whitethroat sightings, with one found by Collieston Birder in the roadside willows, followed by one at the Reserve office this morning, and then another in our garden this evening. With a promising weather forecast for the next few days, I hope we're reporting on more passerine interest soon...

A species from the warmer parts of Europe, the great white egret was once an extremely rare visitor to the UK. My first one was back in 1984! and at the time was a major rarity being only the 28th record for the UK. Nowadays it's breeding in England and is an annual visitor to North-east Scotland.

But this is the first one on Cotehill and photographed from my house.
In filthy weather conditions it was great to see it from the comfort of the house! The cheeky chat was joined in the garden by a Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest, while the Reserve also boasted two of the latter plus a Willow Warbler earlier in the day.
Winter is clinging on in the form of the long-staying Scaup on the Sand Loch and a first-winter Iceland Gull on Forvie beach on Friday 1st, but it seems the seasons are turning now!Samwisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14690986247581337153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4264903230274324576.post-47922476232786333352016-02-14T19:04:00.003+00:002016-02-14T19:29:22.546+00:00Winter imagesSome cold weather has finally settled in , though little of note today despite this in the Collieston area. A drake Goosander was on Meikle today as well as a single Gadwall. 30 plus Skylark were in fields just south of Mains of Slains. The sea was quiet today, though on Friday there had been a good movement of Fulmar and Kittiwake in the gale force winds. There continues to be good numbers of smaller gulls especially in the fields around Slains and Meikle with them often numbering in the few hundreds. There is a flock of about a dozen Fieldfare frequenting the Cotehill area.
No sign this weekend of the adult Iceland Gull that has been noted on and off at Cransdale over the last few weeks, nor the Mediterranean Gull that put in an appearance recently.
Haven't posted anything on here for many's the long age. Thought it was about time I confirmed that Rosie and I are still wielding the binoculars on the patch, and supplemented the New Year update provided by Collieston Birder.

Stormy is an understatement for what we've endured this winter. Little Auks were a constant feature from 2nd January until the weather settled, with several storm-driven birds appearing in the roads and gardens of the village. Precious little else was moving save for Kittiwakes and a few Gannets, but we did see a Bonxie fighting its way north on 4th. An immature Iceland Gull briefly dropped in at Cransdale on the same day.

On the estuary, three Scaup have been present for a few days, with another (perhaps the 'usual' wintering bird?) on the Sand Loch until it was frozen off earlier this week. With it Little Auks have started streaming past with nearly 400 seen in less than 90 minutes watching today. Yesterday one was taken into care by Craig and Ruth by the Sand Loch. Longer counts were difficult in the atrocious conditions. Otherwise most notable around Collieston was a drake Goosander frequenting Cotehill on New Years day and a Raven in the Kirkton area the same day.
Today there was a Little Gull mid afternoon infant of Waulkmill Hide and a Gannet unusually in the same area.
Otherwise a significant clear-out of migrants, with only one of the previously group of Whinchat in the Kirkton and Slains area being seen.

The local pools continue to hold good numbers of Ruff. There were 2 Little Stint at the Snub Car park at about 13.30 today and a Spotted Redshank.

Maybe the only pictures of the Paddyfield taken yesterday due to its elusive behaviour were taken by Nick Littlewood. One of these record shots is shown below.
Perhaps birds working down the coast, or maybe the extra cover in Collieston has held more, but new sightings since included a new Reed Warbler on Wednesday at the roadside bushes, and then yesterday 1 + Pied Flycatcher, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler and Wood Warbler. There was also a very fleeting sighting of an interesting acrocephalus warbler first thing yesterday in the churchyard, but it was not seen in the evening.
Its identity was sorted this morning as a Paddyfield Warbler- new for the patch, and only the second for the region following the Logie Buchan bird a few years ago, which was only seen by a few.
Mostly extremely elusive , when it does show it seems to be best to view from the road.It does call fairly regularly-a usually quiet "chek". First thing it also gave a couple of "cherr" calls.
It usually frequents more eastern locations in Central Asia and around the Caspian and Black seas.

Bit of cloud appearing outside just now, so maybe some hope it will stay for another day.

There was also Reed Warbler, Pied Flycatcher and Lesser Whitethroat in the nearby roadside trees and bushes.
As reported by Collieston Birder, things kicked off last week with a nice selection of common migrants plus PS's rather lovely Arctic Warbler on Forvie - a first for Rosie and I. The Red-backed Shrike that dropped in at Sand Loch Corner last Thursday was a welcome addition to the total as well.

Right on cue, this Shrike was one of several in the North-east last week.

After a weekend away (and predictably dipping CB's Icterine Warblers), we were back into the fray on Monday evening, in lovely conditions of light easterly and drizzle. Two hours around North Forvie at dusk produced a Greenish Warbler (making a nice 'double' after last week's Arctic), two Wrynecks together in one willow, a Wood Warbler, a Reed Warbler, two Pied Flycatchers and yet more common migrants. A champagne session on the patch!
The following morning the Greenish was still present, and showed well if briefly - though its voice was a big giveaway while it remained hidden! Another Wryneck was also present alongside it, and could have been a different bird to the previous night's duo.

Upon returning home after the working day, things then continued with a brace of Reed Warblers performing in the garden throughout the evening.
A lot of Ruff are now coming through as well, with a flock of 60 currently just off the estuary south of Meikle Loch. A highlight was the adult White-rumped Sandpiper (CNG) which was present around the Newburgh end for 2 or 3 days last weekend.
The heavy rain on Tuesday of last week, and the persistent easterly winds resulted in a good fall of migrants, with the Forvie sands getting the star bird in the form of an Arctic Warbler (PS) found on Wednesday late afternoon.
Surprisingly this was the first accepted of this species in the region since 1979 I think. Interesting to note that bird was on almost exactly the same date as this one, and nearby on the Foveran links.
Wednesday morning also brought a Lesser Whitethroat, Pied and Spotted Flycatcher, and good numbers of Willow Warbler to Kirkton. The number of Butterflies turning up as well was striking, especially Painted Ladies.
The fall continued to turn up interesting birds locally , with a Red-backed Shrike at the Sandloch, found by a fellow blogger, and then an Icterine Warbler on Saturday 22nd in the Kirkton roadside trees. Willow Warbler numbers were high, and also notable were the number of Whinchats with a count of 8 in and around the village yesterday. The remained a few Pied and Spotted Flycatchers also.
A Marsh Harrier flew over Kirkton yesterday, a Wood Sandpiper is just over the crossroads yesterday and today on the small flood.

There were 3 Little Stint to be seen on the upper Ythan Estuary yesterday, and there were various smaller groups of Ruff on the feilds and the Estuary.
Local birding variety is provided by the variety of breeding birds on show and the increasing numbers of fledged juveniles. Black-headed Gulls feeding from the surface of the loch were a fine sight on Saturday, as was this preening Sand Martin pictured on a fenceline near Logie Buchan.
